Wine Storage Essentials

Posted by admin in April 9th 2011

One of the toughest buying decisions you could ever come across is buying a wine refrigerator.  Because wine refrigerators are a relative newcomer in the refrigeration cooling market, you may not have enough information on some of the essential considerations that you need to look out for.  As special and exclusive type of refrigerator, a wine cooler is likened to be the modern-day wine cellar designed in the appliance form.

In truth, there are many home appliance brands that offer specialty refrigerators like wine fridges.  Some of them include Thermador, GE and Viking which are also well-acclaimed for their cooling efficiencies.  But nothing as accurately designed and luxurious as a typical Sub Zero wine refrigerator which is considered to be the most expensive.

Here are some of the wine storage essentials.

Control the Temperature

With a wine refrigerator, you can easily control the level of temperature inside it to better store your wine according to its temperature requirement.  Regular refrigerators run the risk of changing the temperature abruptly especially if it is frequently opened every now and then.  If changes in temperature should occur, it should be slow.  Temperature is the leading factor that affects the taste of wine.

Control the Humidity

As much as you should need to monitor the temperature, you also have to watch out for the humidity.  In storing wine, it should not go over 70% than required.  Go for refrigerators with humidity-controlled zones.

Keeping the Wine in the Dark

Like keeping the wine collection in the underground wine cellar, you also need to keep your wine away from the harsh direct sunlight or UV rays.  Why?  Wines are sensitive when it comes to extreme natural light exposures.  If you don’t want them to smell unpleasant then go for wine refrigerator designs that have built-in UV filters.  For instance, Sub-Zero has soft low voltage lighting to appropriate the grain of light required for storing light.
