Tips On Sound Proofing Your Home

Posted by admin in April 12th 2010

We all love the idea of having peace and tranquility in our own homes; however, there are times when noises can really blight our lives.  It might be that you have a really noisy neighbor who plays their music really loudly or perhaps you live next to a busy main road with lots of traffic noise.  Whatever the reason, you should look at different methods of sound proofing your home.

Windows - A lot of noise can certainly get into your home via the windows so if you have only got single glazed windows you might want to look at having them upgraded.  You can either buy brand new double or triple glazed windows or you can have secondary glazing installed over your existing windows.

Curtains - There are special sound insulating curtains that you can buy that will really help keep noises out.  They can even be installed on the walls too and are particularly popular with those who have a home theater room and don’t want to disturb others in another room.

Flooring - A lot of sound can travel underneath the flooring and there are a number of different things you can do to sound insulate your floors.  If you have gaps between the floorboards you should fill them up with a filler.  This will stop sound from getting between the boards.  There are also underlays that can be bought and mass loaded vinyl (MLV) is very popular for this purpose.  The best floor covering for sound insulation purposes is carpeting because it absorbs the sound.

Resilient Channels - If you are really serious about sound insulation you should have a company into your home to install what’s called resilient channels.  Metal strips are utilized in order to keep the ceiling and walls apart from the framing.  If you are not a DIY expert then leave it to the professionals to deal with.

As you should be able to discern, there are loads of different techniques you can employ in soundproofing your home.  It really is all dependent on what kind of property you have, how much money you have to spend and how much disruption you want when having these things installed.  Some people want to know about how to soundproof a basement whilst others want to sound proof a condo, so it’s difficult to give a definitive answer.
