The Right Wall Paint is Important

Posted by David Armstrong in January 15th 2010

Whether you’re decorating the exterior or interior of your home, choosing the right wall paint is important for getting a good overall look and feel. Choosing wall paints isn’t just about getting the right color though; you need to make sure you buy the right paint for the job.

Exterior and Interior Wall Paints

Generally, you only need to worry about the durability of the paint if you’re going to be painting an exterior wall. If you think about it, an exterior wall has to deal with the weather conditions all year round, while an interior wall by comparison, has to cope with very little. Even so, that doesn’t mean you should buy the cheapest possible paint for your interior walls because you still need to make sure it has the right finish. When wall painting, you’ll put the same amount of effort in whether you buy cheap or expensive paint, so in most cases, it’s a good idea not to gamble on an inferior product.

Wall Painting Techniques

In most cases, painting a wall is a straightforward process, but you still need to know the basic techniques. When painting walls, you should usually use three coats – a single later of primer paint and two of finish. You also need to make sure you’re relatively quick when applying paint to the roller or brush because you don’t want the paint to dry before you do the next part of the wall; otherwise, it may end up looking like separate coats.

Wall Painting Ideas

Once you’ve got the basic technique for painting walls sorted and have chosen the right paint types, you may want to consider some of the more interesting ideas for decorating. For example, you can use wall paint colors to create different effects.

A commonly used technique is to have different colors on walls that are next to each other. This works best if you use contrasting colors and can have quite a dramatic effect on a room.

When thinking of wall painting ideas, there is nothing wrong with being creative, but you do need to be a bit careful not to use colors that don’t go well together. It is often a good idea to look at how other people have decorated their house and then use what you think works in your own. There are plenty of home design magazines where you’ll be able to find different ideas for wall painting.
