The Best Places To Put Outdoor Sconces & Other Exterior Fixtures

Posted by admin in July 19th 2010

The location of outdoor lights can seem like a difficult task to master, but the effects can be extremely rewarding when the project comes together. While a little creativity goes a long way, some fixtures just look better when used in specific situations. For example, perhaps the best place to put an outdoor sconce is on either side of an exterior door. This type of positioning allows for a uniform and balanced appearance, plus the entry way is adequately illuminated resulting in a safe way into and out of the residence. Of course, several types of outdoor lights can be used in a variety of ways. Floodlights or spotlights can be used to up light a tree, flagpole, or specific section of the house.

Pathways, paved walkways, sidewalks, and garden trails present the opportunity for the homeowner or designer to get creative with light effects. While a few of the best places to put outdoor sconces are along the walls the path or walk leads around, smaller lights can be used to illuminate any curves or turns in the area. When highlighting small details use of a smaller light is usually the best idea; whereas, larger areas can handle the brightness of a larger light such as a incandescent light or fluorescent t5 light fixture. Depending on the type of lights being installed, some experimentation will likely be needed before the units can be permanently located.

The important underlying element of installing landscape, outdoor, or garden lights is to not over think the task, and certainly not to overdo the lighting element. Focusing on small elements is a great way to enhance the details of a property, while large swaths of light should be used for safety and security purposes. Again, sometimes the entire project just comes together, and other times it can seem extremely frustrating. By sticking to it and trying new things, just about any homeowner can find the best place for their outdoor light fixtures. By taking a few minutes or hours to get things just right, owners can increase the value of the property and house.
