The Basics of Small Kitchen Design

Posted by David Armstrong in January 15th 2010

Having a small kitchen doesn’t mean you have no options when it comes to design. While small kitchen designs may require you to be more creative, if you spend some time researching different design ideas you’re bound to find a style that suits you and your kitchen. The kitchen is one of the most commonly used areas of the house so it’s important to get it right. Here are a few of the more general small kitchen design ideas.

Furniture for small kitchen designs

If you have a small kitchen then don’t be fooled into thinking that you can’t have any furniture in it. If you want to have a table and chairs inside the small kitchen then buy ones made of a transparent material giving the illusion of more space. Also make sure that you leave plenty of room around the edge of the furniture so that it does’ít appear too cramped. Having transparent doors on your kitchen cupboards can also have a similar effect.

Making the most of workspace

One of the major problems with having a small kitchen is the lack of workspace available for cooking. The best way around this is to use built-in stoves, hanging utensils so they don’t take up workspace and an effective use of drawers. The more clutter you have on your work surfaces the smaller the kitchen will appear, so you want to avoid this at all costs when coming up with small kitchens designs.

Choosing the right colors

When you look at small kitchen design pictures one of the common themes you’ll notice is the way color is use to emphasize space. For example, a lot of modern kitchens have light walls with darker cabinets which helps to increase the perceived space available. In general, lighter colors are in fashion at the moment, if you want to have a contemporary kitchen. Whites and silvers also have the added bonus of appearing cleaner. Even so, you shouldn’t be afraid of adding some character to your kitchen too.

One of the best ways to get ideas is to look online for small kitchen design photos. You’ll be amazed at the creative solutions people have come up with to decorate even the smallest kitchens. Kitchen design for small kitchen doesn’t have to be difficult and it can be made even easier by taking what has worked well for other people and applying it to your own home.
