Remodeling a house is never as easy as it looks on TV. Whether you’re simply sizing up wooden rocking chairs for nursery decorations or looking to outfit your porch or indoor staircase with wrought iron railings or something as big as remodeling the bathroom or adding on a garage, being prepared is always a good idea.
The very first thing to do before remodeling anything is to write a list. Jot down not what the design you want it to be will be, but what you don’t like about your current house. For something as simple as furniture for a nursery, it can be just jotting down the handful of things you would like to have available in the nursery. For the bathroom upgrade, it will be things like ‘tired of cleaning the tub, want something that doesn’t take up as much space and is easier to clean. “It needs to be upgraded and the tile is cracking.” For the stairwell, it can be ‘the stair needs a banister” or “the stair needs a new banister.
Now figure out a budget. By doing a budget for furniture, you can find out if you need to go scrounging around online for the cheapest deals, or if you can go with something beautiful and functional. You can also work out if you need to upgrade the furniture by refinishing it yourself once you purchase it or if you can buy furniture that matches right from the beginning. with the stair wells, you can find out if you want to do wrought iron or if your budget will only allow wood, or if you can get elegantly designed iron or if you have to go with the simple licorice twist. For the bathroom, it is a good idea to simply set out the budget, cut it in half and show the smaller amount to a contractor. They will overcharge for surprise factors as the project goes on, which is why it is a good idea to show them a smaller budget initially.
With furniture, you can generally do it yourself. With the banister, if you’re a do it yourself sort of person, then you can generally do it yourself. You may want to get a contractor anyway. For a bathroom, unless you are trained in repairing bathrooms, leave that up to a contractor. They will get it done faster and you can make them deal with any significant problems.
