Quick Facts About Fireplace Inserts

Posted by admin in January 19th 2011

Fireplace inserts are designed to fit inside existing fireplaces, including almost any size brick or steel-lined hearth. Electric and ventless gas fireplace inserts can often be found at local barbecue specialty stores, home and garden centers, as well as from online retailers. Both types are inexpensive to operate and install. Neither require a chimney or venting to outside air.

Electric fireplaces usually simulate the look of burning logs or glowing coals. The technology behind simulating a traditional fireplace has become so advanced that it is often difficult to tell the difference between the two. Because of their low to non-existent maintenance, clean burning, and realistic look, they have increased significantly in popularity over the last few years.

An electric fireplace may be the most logical option if you live in an apartment or condominium. This use-case is where electric fireplaces are gaining rapidly in popularity due to the ease of installation. However, you probably shouldn’t buy an electric fireplace if you’re looking to save money on your energy bill. In many parts of the country, where electricity is more expensive, it is cheaper to heat your home with a ventless gas fireplace.

While a ventless fireplace is just one type of gas fireplace, they are quite rapidly becoming the most frequently installed supplemental natural gas-fired home heating product in North America. They are also known as vent free fireplaces, or sometimes zero clearance fireplaces. Ventless gas fireplaces also cost less than traditional furnaces and heaters due to their almost 100% efficiency.

Many people are turned off by the potential safety concerns of ventless gas fireplaces. These units exhaust their combustion products (CO2 and water vapor) into the room. This can cause problems with moisture buildup. For this reason, electric fireplaces have become preferred in apartments and condos. Additionally, electric fireplace logs come with a variety of flames. They come in so many shapes, sizes, and designs that you will be able to match any home décor – from traditional to modern.
