Pendant Lighting for the Kitchen

Posted by admin in July 31st 2010

I’ve noticed recently that there’s been a bit of craze with people picking pendant lighting for their kitchens. For the uninitiated and are unfamiliar with this type of lighting, allow me to give a brief explanation. They are just like a ceiling light, that is they hang down from a ceiling, but the difference is in the design of the shade. The shade tends to be elongated and be made from different kinds of material in order to give a contemporary look. The number of lights could range for singular to a group of them.

Choosing a kitchen pendant lighting is more than considering the aesthetic appeal of it. As such, I want to take some time with kitchen lights guide and go through the important points to think about when you go shopping for this kind of light.

First and foremost, the kitchen light you choose of course must be practical and functional. If it looks great and your guests admire it a lot but does not provide sufficient lighting (or alternatively gives a glare that is intolerable), then it will be totally useless. The idea is to have effective lighting above the work area of the kitchen – that is, bright enough to see things clearly but at the same time not be too bright and become an annoyance. The practical aspect extends to the maintenance of the light. I personally prefer something that looks sleek, minimalist as supposed to intricate, which usually tends to be a nightmare to clean.

Once you have the practical component covered, you can start to look into the shade of the light. Specifically, making a choice on the style, color and material of the shade. From an appearance point of view, the selection is going to be based on a combination of personal taste and how it sits together with the surrounding. For example, in terms of material, the shade could be made from glass, stainless steel, acrylic, etc.

As you can probably guess, these principles I’ve covered where we tackle both practical and aesthetic facets to choosing pendant lights can be equally applied to other lighting selections such as solar garden lights.
