Methods of Cleaning Chimneys

Posted by admin in August 29th 2010

If you don’t have any help, cleaning a chimney can be very difficult. It is necessary to clean your chimney at least once a year to prevent the possibility of fires or dangerous fumes. This isn’t a job that can be taken lightly. A thorough cleaning is the only way to avoid problems. A lot of people hire a professional chimney cleaning company to take care of the job. If you prefer to do things yourself, gather a few friends and take a look at the following methods.

First you should gather your materials. You are going to need chimney sweep brushes, chimney rods, a drop cloth on the floor below and any nearby furniture, a mirror, a broom or vacuum, goggles, and a good flashlight, and a ladder to get up on the roof.

Here are the most popular methods for chimney cleaning.

The most popular method is using a rod and working from the top down. This involves getting up on the roof and sliding the brush down the chimney. You can then clean the inside of the chimney liner. A variation of this is using a rod but working from bottom up. This means you don’t have to get up on your roof because you will be working from below the fireplace. However, this can be a much messier way of doing it so be sure to cover your furniture.

The dual line method is a bit more thorough but you’ll have to recruit a friend to assist. You attach a pull ring and a rope to each end of the brush. One person will work from up on the roof and drop the brush down the chimney. The other person waits at the bottom by the fireplace and grabs onto the other end and then you both pull the brush back and forth to get all the grime off the inside walls of your chimney.

Finally, you should use the mirror and flashlight to inspect the inside of chimney and make sure you got every inch of it. Then you need to clean up everything that fell down the chimney into your home using a vacuum or a good broom. If there is a lot of dirt, you may even need to use a shovel. It’s a good idea to wear goggles and a mask for this entire operation to avoid breathing dangerous dust or getting small sharp pieces of ash into your eyes. This is not a difficult task if you know what you’re doing.
