Make Your Own Garage Door Insulation

Posted by admin in May 4th 2010

With recession hitting the market, the price of various tools and accessories have risen enormously. In such a scenario, it is easy and economic to go for Do it yourself (DIY) kits for all types of home repair. If you are comfortable handling a tool kit and can spare some time, you can opt for a DIY kit for insulating your garage door. The process is easy, all you are required to do is to collect the raw materials, get tools and start working.

Some of the raw materials that you will require in the process are:

  • Plywood – These should be cut into sections. The number will depend on the size of door
  • Pink Fiberglass – One roll will be sufficient
  • A set of screws – The set of tools should complement the door’s material
  • Paint tub – One gallon of paint will be enough, however, choose a color that blends with your house.
  • Tool Box – Your tool box should contain a powerful driller, a pair of strong scissors or crimpers, a sander, some paint brushes and tape.

Cut the fiberglass into equal sections and lay them one by one(separately) in the door. Fix the plywood over the fibreglass insulation with screws onto the garage door; make sure that the plywood should not interfere with joints. After fixing, sand all the sections such that all the corners and edges are rounded. After this is done, tape the sectional area and paint it once (the complete inner section). While painting, take care that it does not stick to the joints. Keep the whole set up aloof for at least half a day before joining for the paint to dry up.

The procedure is quite simple just requires some patience. With some materials and tools, you can insulate the door of the garage on your own, almost free of cost. Make sure though that your wear a pair of gloves to handle the fiberglass and if you need to cut it, wear a dust mask so that you don’t inhale any of the tiny molecules.
