Mahogany Exterior Doors are the Preferred Doors

Posted by admin in June 23rd 2010

The entrance to your home is the focal point. It is the area most people will see or look for first. If your home were to have a calling card, your door would be it. Doors come in all types of materials including wood, steel, recycled plastic, aluminum among others. One of the most popular doors is wooden type. Mahogany is a richly colored material that is one of the more valuable woods. As the wood ages, it turns from a pinkish color to a deep red brown. There is a variety of trees that produce mahogany. These trees grow quite large thereby producing large boards. Mahogany doors are typically one piece because they come from such large trees.

Mahogany exterior doors are solid, one-piece doors with inset panels, glass panels or a combination glass and wrought iron panels. Some doors have glass sidelights while others have a glass transom. The detail on a mahogany door can be quite intricate adding to their eye catching beauty.

Standard exterior door heights are 80” (6’-8”), 84” (7’-0”) and 96” (8’-0”) but most door manufactures will custom design a door to your specifications. The doors are standard widths beginning at 24” (2’-0”) wide and continuing at 6” increments to 36” (3’-0”). Exterior doors can also be double doors to a total width of 96” (8’-0”). The doors are offered unfinished or factory prefinished. The prefinished product is obviously more expensive and if you can afford the extra cost it is well worth it as the finish is a high standard and will last quite a years.

Besides mahogany, most hard woods make perfect exterior doors. All hardwood is durable, sturdy and can take the punishment an exterior door receives, especially if the door has a lot of use.

Hardwood doors can stand to a hammering and not affected by changing weather conditions from the coldest winter to the warmest summer. A hardwood exterior door with properly fitting hardware and the right weather stripping will keep the cold out and cool air in during the air conditioning months.
