How to Unclog a Toilet without Having to Call a Plumber

Posted by admin in April 23rd 2010

Toilet clogs can happen at the worst and inconvenient moments. There is a method to unclogging it without having to use a plumber’s snake and to avoid calling an expensive plumber. All you will need in a plunger, which can be found at any hardware store. Try not to go for the smallest and cheapest one. The larger ones are stronger and you will have more success in fixing the clog. Here is the process for how to unclog a toilet with a plunger.

The first step is to turn off the water valve, which is usually behind the toilet. Doing this will prevent overflowing or stop an already overflowing toilet. You may want to grab a bucket to remove excess water from the toilet. Place some towels on the floor, surrounding the toilet base. This will help catch any spillage that might happen, especially if the bowl has been filled to the top with water.

Using the plunger, cover the hole and make sure there is water coming up at least half way up the rubber cup. If there is no water in the bowl, pour some in. Also, be sure to hold the plunger upright. This will ensure a tight seal over the hole.

Next, push the plunger up and down firmly but without breaking the seal. Repeat this step a couple of times. On the third pull, pull the handle up to release the suction. This should clear the clog and release the water. If it does not, then repeat the above steps and push a little harder. After all of the liquid has released, turn the water valve back on and try to flushing again to make sure that the clog is cleared.

Knowing how to unclog a toilet is a useful skill that can save you a lot of money. It is the best way to unclog a toilet without having to call a plumber.
