How to Install Roofing Felt

Posted by David Armstrong in February 4th 2010

Roofing felt is extremely useful when installing a roof and is used on most roof types. It’s also easy to install in most cases. Roofing felt is used as a barrier between different layers of the roofing that keeps out rain water and other moisture that might be around. In this article we’ll be going through some of the basics of roofing felt installation as well as some of the common mistakes made.

First of all, when installing a felt roof you should never install onto a wet surface. Doing this can cause problems in the future so if your roof gets wet before you can apply the felt leave it to dry for a few days.

Start by nailing the first layer of felt to the wooden decking on the roof. It’s always a good idea to start at the lowest point on the roof and then work up. Also, make sure that you align the felt in the right way and that it’s flat on all areas of the roof. Once you’ve laid the first layer you should then go back and lay the second. Both of these layers should use underlay felt. Make sure that the joins in the felt don’t match up between layers as this can make the roof more susceptible to leaking. Finally, you can layer the top layer of felt above this to make sure your roof is fully resistant to moisture.

Some of the more common mistakes when applying felt roofing are not overlapping the different layers of felt, as well as not making sure the felt is smoothly installed into the roof surface. You should also make sure you choose the right type of felt for your job i.e. choosing roofing felt or roofing felt paper. If you aren’t sure which is right for you then make sure you ask a professional before buying, as he or she will be able to give you the best advice for your roof type and climate conditions.

Installing roofing felt is vital for most types of roof if you want it to last a long time and keep the moisture out. While in most cases installing roofing felts is a straightforward process, if you aren’t confident or comfortable doing it then it’s nearly always a good idea to hire a professional roof service to do it for you so you can be sure the job is done right.
