How to Choose a Wall Lamp

Posted by David Armstrong in December 4th 2009

Choosing a wall lamp for your house shouldn’t be difficult but there are so many different options that if you’re not careful you could spend a long time trying to choose. In this article I’ll be talking about some of the decisions you should make before you even start looking for wall lamps to ensure you don’t waste hours looking at unsuitable lighting.

First of all you need to decide exactly why you need wall mounted lamps. Do you want to provide extra lighting to a specific area of the room? Do you want to just increase the amount of general lighting in that room? This will help you decide whether you need a wall mounted lamp that provides ambient lighting or one that is more direct. The room you’re putting the lamp in will also make a difference. For example if you’re lighting a bathroom then a wall lamp may be used to light the area around the mirror while in a bedroom it may be used to provide light for reading. Both will require different styles of lighting.

Once you’ve decided on the purpose of the lighting you next need to think about the style. This is where choosing a wall lamp can become difficult but if you just think carefully about the style of your room at the moment and what kind of lamp would complement the existing design then it becomes a lot easier. There is a wide range of different styles so you’ll nearly always be able to find one that matches your room. For example a Tiffany wall lamp is great if you want a more authentic design that goes well with a traditional house.

You also have options such as the swing arm wall lamp which is good if you need to focus lighting in different areas of the room and the plug in wall lamp if you don’t want to go through the hassle of installing a lamp in the wall.

An important consideration that you must take into account is how much money you have to spend on your wall lamp. An easy way to narrow down your options is to set a strict budget as this will remove many lamps from consideration and allow you to focus completely on the ones you can afford. This will save you a lot of time as well as probably saving you money too!
