Fixing Up a Rental Home

Posted by admin in May 14th 2010

Just about any place you live can be fixed up to look nicer. For instance, one place I rented had very little storage, and after talking to the landlord I was able to get permission to build a set of shelves in the bathroom. There was a great place for it – unused and a lot of empty space – it needed something to make use of it. The space was 4.5′ wide x 7′ tall. It was simple and all I use was 2x6x8″ cut to fit on each side screwing them to the wall then 2x6x6″ on each shelf going every foot for the first two.

After that two more at 1 1/2′ leaving less then two feet for the bottom. Then to decorate I added some glue and stuck a particleboard to the top of each shelf being careful to cover it fully and to help cover the particleboard edges I added 1/4 round to the side of each shelf. Then a 1/4 round stick from roof to floor. on each side from roof to floor. The landlord was pleased and I got a lot more storage. He ended up buying all the materials and threw in a little extra for my work! It took just over 2 hours with my nail gun and saved me a lot of storage headaches along with $50.00 off my rent!

Another time, I got a Formica counter top that was 3′ wide x 2.5′ deep with 4″ back splash. It was being thrown out into the trash by a counter top company as left-overs. Then I proceeded to build a 3.5′ high x 2′ deep and 3′ wide box out of 2x4x10 lumber. For the back sides it had particleboard, and on the bottom it had plywood.

After having most of the box done, I decided to add a shelf inside to hold more items and used the wood left over from the making the box. (Pro Tip: Any time you have a project and you’re buying wood, get a bigger piece of wood than you need. You’ll need the extra if you make a cutting mistake or you can use the extra for another project.) I got 4 wheels I placed on the bottom and made a movable cutting table (I have a few spare wheels because they are easy to add and great for projects!) That was not only handy and easy to use but cost me less then $60.00 for what I seen cost over $200.00! I was also able to pick color and make it into what I wished for my kitchen.
