Exterior Metal Doors for Added Security

Posted by admin in May 7th 2010

When added security is required for your premises the first thing you should upgrade is probably the main entrance door. Statistics have shown that a burglar will generally attempt to gain access via the front door. Statistics also show that the burglar will only spend a very short period of time trying to break the door’s defenses. After a certain point of time they will give up. If the door and frame is timber type they will probably succeed within a relatively short time of period. They generally attack the doors frame which is the weakest point, forcing the lock from its keeper.

Replacing the entrance doors with exterior metal doors for added security may be enough to put the burglar off from even trying to break in. Sometimes a burglar may not succeed in gaining access to a property but in their attempt to do so they can cause a lot of damage to the door and frame, which ends up a major inconvenience and very costly to the property owner.

Metal doors are constructed using a steel sheet on each face of the door, fixed to a steel welded internal frame structure. The internal core may be filled with insulation for added thermal efficiency or filled with solid wood for example, which will increase the security rating of the door. A steel security door is quite heavy at around 50kg per door therefore it must be hung in a steel rebated frame. The frame can incorporate an anti jemmy plate at the lock position preventing an attacker forcing the lock. These door sets are usually supplied with multi point locking systems making the whole package very secure. In addition steel bolts known a ‘dog bolts’ are positioned on the hinged side of the door, improving the overall strength of the door set. If a vision panel is required, multi layer sheets of glass can be insert into a steel frame and securely bolted to the door panel.

With the addition of a steel door on your property you can rest assured that a would be burglar may be put off even trying to the force the door, and if they do, the probability will be that they will give up and leave the premises. Therefore having metal doors in place may act as a deterrent.
