I finally did it. You know the garage where you probably have all of your old junk, tools, and land scraping materials piled up is now my home-away-from-home. It took a while, but after a tiring 3-day weekend of full of cleaning and multiple hauls down to the junk yard, I had enough to build my workshop. And I couldn’t wait to get started and see exactly what I could do with the space.
If you do the same thing and clean out your garage, your mind will begin to envision all of the things you could use that extra space for. You could always park your car in it and use just for that purpose, but why? You’ve probably been parking your car in the street or in the drive way, so keep it that way and use your garage as a sort of sanctuary. It could be a game room, entertainment room, a workshop, or you could even do a full blow diy garage conversion and have an entirely new room.
Now all of this sounds great, but your garage gets incredibly cold during the winter. Fortunately, there are a couple of options you can go with to heat it. The expensive route is trying to extend your homes central heating and air system to the garage. Personally, I think this is not necessary unless you’re doing a complete conversion of the garage into an extra bedroom. If you’re not, a simple garage heater will be perfect to heat it during the winter months.
The first thing you need to decide is what type of garage heater is right for you. There are three options for you to choose from: electric, propane, and natural gas. Now these are all great options, but one probably works better for you.
Electric garage heaters are great for those people that want a simple plug and play option. The beauty of it is that you get to take it straight out of the box, plug in, and get going. Plus, you don’t have to worry about venting exhaust or worrying about gas leaks which are things you need to consider with propane and natural gas heaters.
That’s not to say propane gas heaters aren’t great. If you don’t want to raise your home’s electricity bill and want an independent energy source for your heater, then a propane heater is probably better for you. And they are just as efficient as the other heater. Like all propane based tools, you’ll have to refill your tank regularly if you use it everyday and you’ll have to be aware of gas leaks.
So it all really depends on your needs and lifestyle. If you want an a really simple and easy solution, and won’t be heating your garage on a daily basis, then an electricity based garage heater is great. If you want a more energy independent heating source that’s cheap to refill, then a propane garage heater is right for you. Either way, both are efficient and solid heating options for your garage.
