Caring of Your Home’s Plumbing: Tips from an Atlanta Plumber

Posted by admin in May 16th 2010

In today’s tight economy, many families are looking for ways to cut costs and save money. Even the best budgeting practices and attempts at saving can be completely thrown out the window when there is a plumbing emergency. Once there is a major plumbing problem, there is little you can do about it unless you have experience in plumbing repair. However, there are many things you can put into practice right now to prevent future problems and cut down on repair costs. Take it from a longtime Atlanta Plumber, the time to act is always now and not when its already too late.

The most obvious step in keeping your pipes in good condition is to treat them right. Never, ever flush paper towels or feminine sanitary products down the toilet. For households with young children, take the time to teach them the proper amount of toilet paper that should be used. Flushing large amounts of toilet paper at once can easily clog a toilet. If you have a garbage disposal in the kitchen, read the instructions and only use it as directed. Things like hard fruit rinds, corn husks, and other stringy vegetable matter can clog or break a garbage disposal. Never put food down regular kitchen drains by always scraping plates into the garbage before washing.

If you have a leaky faucet, replace or tighten the washer in the faucet as soon as possible. A leaky faucet will waste money by wasting water. It can also become worse and more difficult to repair with time. Also make a habit of checking the pipes underneath kitchen and bathroom sinks each week as part of your normal cleaning routine. This will help identify small issues before they become major problems requiring professional assistance.

Investing small amounts of time and care up front, can often avoid large bills in the future. However, because an eventual plumbing emergency is almost inevitable, get recommendations for good plumbers now. This way, if a pipe bursts in the middle of the night, you already have a list of contractors to call instead of randomly picking someone out of the phone book.
