Air Conditioning Filters: Choosing the Right One

Posted by admin in May 24th 2010

For those who are seeking to improve air quality in their home through the use of air filters, one question always come into mind — how do you really choose the right air conditioner filters?

There are various types of air conditioning filters that are out in the market today. This includes the standard, HEPA, pleated, electronic ad electrostatic filters. Among these air filters, the most commonly used in air conditioning systems are the pleated, standard and electrostatic filters. They are usually placed in furnaces, ceilings, walls, or inside the air conditioner system itself.

With the capacity of eliminating 10% of the airborne pollutants, the standard window air conditioner filters would definitely be a great choice. However, it is still advised to change them at least once a month. These air filters are often made from spun fiberglass complete with cardboard frames.

Pleated air filters, on the other hand, can catch 35 up to 40 percent of air particles. They are more efficient in catching unwanted air particles as compared to the standard filter, which means that you’ll get to enjoy better air quality. Due to their increased filtering efficiency, pleated air filters may cost slightly higher than the standard filters. Their prices range from as low as $5 up to $20.

Meanwhile, the electrostatic filters use electrically-charged filter media to attract the dirt particles. Like any other filter, they also need to be changed at least once a year. They can cost anywhere from $20 to more than $100 each.

To ascertain that your air conditioning system will function at its best, proper maintenance is highly advised. This is very much needed so as to ensure good air quality inside your home. It is also a wise idea to replace the air conditioner filters regularly to avoid clogging or blocking the air flow, which can greatly affect the efficiency of the system.
