One of the most beautiful types of house siding is cedar because it provides a warm color and authentic feel to any home. However, although cedar siding has its advantages there are also some drawbacks to using it too.
Like any sort of house siding, cedar is used because it’s a durable material. In some cases, it can last over a hundred years if maintained correctly. However, this brings us onto our first problem because cedar siding maintenance is more involved than other types or material. If you have cedar siding, it needs to be sealed as well as painted regularly. How often you have to do this depends on where you live and the weather conditions in your area, but it will generally be around every four years if you want to keep your siding in good condition.
Aside from its natural beauty, cedar siding comes in many different styles. For example, cedar shake siding looks fantastic in a home where you want to have a more traditional style such as a holiday house. Cedar shingle siding are also often used on residential houses because they can look good in the right situations. You can also buy cedar log siding if you want to create a log cabin style to your house. When choosing the type of siding you want for your house, remember to not only think about your personal taste but how the siding will fit in with the surrounding houses and environment. You don’t want to choose a type of siding that’s going to make your house look out of place in its environment.
A downside to getting cedar siding is that it can be quite expensive. While cedar siding prices aren’t the highest of the different materials you can buy, they aren’t the lowest either. For example, it costs around the same as aluminum but is more expensive than vinyl. The exact price depends on where you live and how much of the material you buy (you can sometimes get bulk discounts) so make sure you compare prices of different siding materials where you live before making your final decision.
While cedar siding will go with a range of different styles and designs, it isn’t for everybody so you need to think carefully about whether it’s right for you before buying. If you don’t think you can cope with the downsides of getting cedar siding then consider using a synthetic material that’s been made to mimic the style.
