A Remodeling Contractor You Can Depend On

Posted by David Armstrong in November 20th 2009

Home remodeling is one of the best investments you can make as a homeowner. The benefits of having a beautiful and updated home to live in and increasing the value of your residence at the same time are so worthwhile in comparison to the discomforts you may endure during the renovation process. To ensure a great outcome for your investment, it is critical that you find a remodeling contractor you can depend on. Here are 3 important steps to follow to find the best remodeling contractor for your home:

Step #1. Find remodeling contractors to interview for your renovation project:

.  Ask for recommendations from friends, family members, co-workers or professional associates you know for the names of some remodeling contractors they know or have worked with. If you are remodeling your bathroom or kitchen specifically, you may want to get the names of bathroom remodeling contractors or kitchen remodeling contractors.

.  After you have the contractors’ names, check out their credentials on-line with the Construction Contractors Board. Make sure these remodel contractors are licensed, bonded and insured. All of this information is available on the CCB website for your state.

.  If their credentials are in place, call them and set up a time for an interview with each one. Ask for 3 references from each contractor during your phone conversation with them. If they do not provide this information, they may have something to hide so don’t keep their names as a potential contractor for your project.

Step #2.  Before the interviews check out their references:

.  Call their references and ask about their experience with the contractors and their work.  Ask for some positive as well as some negative points they perceived while working with the contractors and their crew.

. Since these references came from the contractors, you can feel comfortable asking these references if you could stop by to get a first hand view of the contractor’s work.

. If permitted, go and check out the completed renovations and the quality of their work.

Step #3.  If you are impressed with the work, proceed with the interviews. Make sure to get the answers to the following questions:

.  How long have they worked as a remodeling contractor and what kind of remodeling projects have they completed?

.  Will they personally be at your home to do the renovation or will their crew do the renovation without them being there?

.  Will they clean and haul away the garbage after their work and if these items are included in price of the bid?

After the interviews you should have a very clear idea which remodeling contractor is the best choice for your home.  You’ve done your due diligence in checking out their credentials, their references, their previous work and their professional experience.   Now you can have the confidence to go forward in your renovation project with a remodeling contractor you can depend on.  This process may take some time and effort but it is worth it. After all you are putting someone you do not know in charge of your most expensive possession so do not take the above steps lightly.
